McConnell’s Test
McConnell’s test is used to assess the integrity of the patellofemoral joint.
To perform this test, the patient is in the seated position. Place one hand just above the ankle and push the leg back to 120 degrees of knee flexion and then apply resistance and ask the patient to extend the knee. The procedure is then repeated at 90 degrees, 60, 30, and in full extension.
If retropatellar pain is produced in any of these positions, repeat the test in that position while pressing over the lateral side of the patella to displace it medially.
The test is positive when retropatellar pain is produced with isometric contraction in any of the testing positions that is then relieved when repeated with medial displacement of the patella. This is indicative of patellofemoral pain syndrome.
