Ege’s Test

Ege’s test is used to detect the presence of medial and lateral meniscal tears. This test is also called the weight-bearing McMurray’s test.

To perform this test, the patient is standing with the feet shoulder-width apart. To test the medial meniscus, ask the patient to turn their feet fully outward and perform a squat. Pain and or a click felt by the patient at the medial joint line suggests a medial meniscal tear.

To test the lateral meniscus, ask the patient to turn their feet fully inward and again perform a squat. Pain and or a click felt by the patient at the lateral joint line suggests a lateral meniscal tear.

It should be noted that pain or clicking in either testing position might also occur as the patient descends into or arises from the squatting position.
